Music Vault: A Dylan Classic

I’m a huge fan of ballads. Blame my parents.

I grew up on a steady diet of music that included a range of genres from Broadway and show tunes to Country, Motown (mom loved her Motown), and rock-n-roll; from Elvis and Lil’ Richard to Elton John and Journey. Boston, The Temptations, Billy Joel and Tina Turner the list of artists and songs is endless and diverse.

I’ve always seasoned my melodic fare with Reggae, Folk, Metal, R&B, Hip-Hop and of course Polynesian but every genre has a tiny place in its heart for a ballad.

One of my all-time favorites (you’ll find that I have tons of favorites) is “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan. If you’re not a big fan of Dylan, this particular song will make you a fan. Since the song was released on Dylan’s “Time Out of Mind” in 1997, it has been re-recorded by Billy Joel, Garth Brooks,Trisha Yearwood and Adele.

I’m a firm believer that a songs melody is the chocolate coating that enhances the flavor of the strawberry, the lyrics. In a day and age where lyrics are an afterthought that is buried under a mound of phat beats, sampled tracks and catchy loops, Dylan is at his artistic best as he languishes in the dark corridors of the melody long enough to draw us into the open with deliberate, well thought out, heartfelt prose.

I absolutely love this song and my favorite rendition is by Adele. Have a listen and tell me what you think. I’d be surprised if you don’t agree with me.

Lyrics:
By Bob Dylan

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows and the star appear
And there is no one to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven’t made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I’ve known it from the moment that we met
There’s no doubt in my mind where you belong

I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue
I’d go crawling down the avenue
There ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain’t seen nothing like me yet

I’d make you happy make your dreams come true
There ain’t nothin’ that I wouldn’t do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love
