The author John Steinbeck said the following about a journey: “A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.” The literal English translation of the Samoan phrase Le Folauga is, “The Journey”. As a freelance writer of more than a dozen years, I’ve found very few things that can properly and accurately represent life as does a journey. Like most people, an accumulation of life experiences has given me perspective. My view of the world can be warped, humorous, analytical, illogical and logical but it will never be the same as yours because we all see life through different lenses. I view my journey through the eyes of a Pacific Islander, born in the United States and raised in the islands of Polynesia. I have the good fortune of having the ability to jump seamlessly between both worlds. I love my Polynesian heritage just as much as I love being an American. His parents hail from the villages of Fagamalo (father) on the island of Savaii, and Sa’aga (mother) on the island of Upolu. He is the former Editor of PolyInsider.com, South Pacific Insider Magazine (SPIMag) and PolyNation Magazine. His work has also appeared on SamoaLive.com, PacBiz.org and in Spasifik Magazine. He is the editor of his own sports blog, Context Sports. Seti has covered major events such as the USA Sevens, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and college sporting events. His subjects have ranged from world heavyweight boxing contender and Olympic silver medalist David Tua to renowned Hawaiian chef Sam Choy, New Zealand comedy duo The Laughing Samoans and Hawaiian singing sensation George Veikoso of Fijian descent. Navigating through life is a tricky affair. Without a little help, it can be pretty daunting. I believe that certain people and specific events are placed in our way to challenge and inspire us to become better, stronger. This is a list of nouns. They are people, places and things that inspired or continue to inspire me to be better and stronger. They have helped me to find my way.
